Summer Bounty

We picked strawberries today.  It was warm out, with a light refreshing breeze.  The air was fragrant with the scent of sun-warmed berries.  The air was clean, the scenery pastoral and beautiful.  Families were everywhere at the U-Pick farm, cheerfully filling their buckets, tasting as they moved down the rows.  Parents explained patiently to excited toddlers about which color berry to pick–and the sticky fingers and stained chins attested to a lesson well-learned and put to immediate good use.  It was such a peaceful time.  We hauled home about 20 pounds of strawberries.  As I picked, I reflected on a simple, familiar prayer:  the Grace Before Meals.   It means so much more than just the prelude to dinner.  Abundance.  Peace.  Blessing.  Well-being.  Beauty.  Caring.  Gratitude.  Love.   God is so good to us, his generosity, endless.

Bless us, O Lord

And these, thy gifts,

which we are about to receive,

from thy bounty

through Christ, Our Lord.

Amen.
